In the book, I speak of a life management system. It’s easiest to explain with a picture. Notice the main categories (Finances, Health, etc) and the subcategories (Exercise and Mental under the Health category). The top of the whiteboard is the active to-do list area. Simply move a magnet up and it becomes active, and back down when you complete it.
Magnetic Life Management System (MLMS)
My magnet placement and handwriting are obviously sloppy. But your system doesn’t have to be sloppy! This is the absolute best system I have ever seen or used. It’s fun and lightning fast to use it every day, which is rare for something that manages so much of your life! It never gets out of date or useless, even if you neglect it for a month. Just move all the magnets down and it’s like new, ready for action again.
The larger magnet you see in the upper right corner is for larger projects with multiple actions, such as the many preparatory tasks required when taking a trip. And remember, this is a whiteboard, meaning that you can also write directly on it for one-time tasks. Simply erase those when you’re done.
Materials to Build Your Own System (Amazon affiliate links):
- Large magnetic dry erase whiteboard (48″ x 36″) :This is different brand than mine, which is no longer sold, but it looks identical and is the same size. Get a big board. I think this is the perfect size, but you could even go bigger. Something about the big board size makes the whole process feel better.
- Rectangular dry erase magnets: These are the main magnets I use. The number of magnets you see in the picture is two of these packs (40 magnets per pack).
- Larger square dry erase magnets: These are the larger, square magnets. To be honest, I rarely use these. But they’re a nice option I guess, and you can get creative with how you use them.
- Dry erase markers (4-color pack): You have to be able to write things!
That’s all you need! Just mount the board on a wall, determine your categories, draw the lines, and get started! You don’t have to know everything you want to do on day one. You’ll think of new things to add days, weeks, and months later.
